The Starliner capsule is now back on earth, successfully flown home without a crew, highlighting the uncomfortable (for supporters of launching people into orbit) fact that, from Gagarin to today, spacecraft crews are mostly just useless cargo.
One could tell from the news that the Boeing engineers were really pissed off by NASA’s decision to bring their ship back empty. They were probably right as a matter of risk assessment, while NASA was thinking about PR and CYA, but Boeing rapidly becoming a grim joke will have its effects.
