Today's Must-Reads - 16 November 2022, More evidence of Covid spread in 2019 & a worrying trend in long term sickness

A selection of the latest news, studies, reports and articles

I spend a lot of time each day gathering together new information and interesting articles. I then pick one or two of the most interesting topics and write about them. However, that leaves a lot of missed out information that I’m not sharing.

Below is a summary of all the latest articles and information that I’ve found. Today, this is a slimmed down version for all subscribers but will be for paid subscribers only a lot of the time in the future.

But first a quick look at a chart from the Office for National Statistics, looking at the number of people out of the labour market because of long term sickness.

Between 2017 and 2019, the trend was flat and consistent but something happened in 2019 that sent the number of long-term sick into overdrive. Is this evidence of Covid spreading in 2019?

Then the first lockdown happened which caused another spike in the number of people with long-term sickness. But interestingly, shortly after that, the number plateaued until early 2021.

Another big spike occurred in early 2021 before a small plateau again. Then in early 2022 an even bigger spike happened, with the trend very firmly up.

As this twitter thread points out, with excess deaths so persistently high, this will start to be felt in workforce participation. After extrapolating the data, they estimate that with current trends, an extra 20,000 people per week will be developing long-term sickness (with 8,000 leaving the workforce).

This will be unsustainable for the economy. Troubling times ahead.

• Barents Observer - One year after the crisis, there is again early ice on Northern Sea Route. Last year's early freeze triggered a critical situation with more than 20 vessels stuck in thick ice. This year, the shipping conditions in Russian Arctic waters might be even worse.

• Investing - FTX creditors may number over 1 million as regulators seek answers. Collapsed crypto exchange FTX outlined a "severe liquidity crisis" in U.S. bankruptcy filings, which said the group could have more than 1 million creditors, as regulators opened probes and the crypto pain spread with the Wall Street Journal reporting BlockFi was planning layoffs and a possible bankruptcy filing.

• Watcher - Global Banks Partner With New York Fed for 12-Week Digital Dollar Pilot. The program, spearheaded by the New York Fed’s Innovation Center, will test how banks use digital dollar tokens. Additionally, some of the largest banks in the world are taking part in this experiment.

• Bloomberg - FTX’s Balance Sheet Was Bad. Serum, customer money, etc.; plus Elon Musk’s Twitter debt and anti-ESG antitrust.

• Zero Hedge - WEF's Klaus Schwab Gives Speech To G20 On The "Need To Restructure The World". Klaus Schwab and the World Economic Forum find themselves waiting around for the next global crisis event after the covid pandemic turned out to be much less threatening to the public than they had originally hoped. In the meantime, Schwab continues to pontificate on the virtues of the "Great Reset" and the usefulness of crisis as a means to accomplish a "restructuring" of the current world order.

• Zero Hedge - Kyiv Demands Access To Poland Blast Site, Doubles Down On 'Russian Attack' Narrative. Despite the US, Poland, and NATO's Secretary General all having at this point admitted that Tuesday's deadly Polish border incident was not due to a Russian attack, but instead was "likely caused by a Ukrainian air defense missile" - according to Jens Stoltenberg's own words, on Wednesday the Ukrainian government is still clinging to its accusations that Russia attacked a NATO ally.
