How many of these experiments are happening in labs around the world, and now long until they make a REALLY bad mistake? It seems like there's a potential 'point of no return' with this CRISPR tech.

Hmm... kinda like this scene from Serenity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-NVs68X_S4 A film about government oppression, the development of a drug to enslave entire populations. The movie was excellent. The series it was spawned from was also great (Firefly).

Can't stop the signal.

Oh great. Yeah. PG level, with no Reavers? Lots of Government oppression? And what, obeisance to the Chinese overlords? I suppose there will be an Inara substitute with another female with bi tendencies after being attracted towards a captain (whose first love is his ship and the focus on survival and the next job) , and Kaylie in the engine room who plays a coy partner, because she has a hankerin' for Simon and longs for the day to get twixt in her nethers. And I can't imagine what they'll do to a Shephard character, when they revile a religious influence. Probably make him a sinful and conflicted character. And 2 by 2, hands of blue? And what about Jayne and his love affair with guns? And bawdy allusions to lusty acts?

Yeah, I see all kinds of ways to brainwash kids ahead. And ruin yet another franchise.

The Alliance will be conservatives in orange make-up with vaguely Confederate flags who lost the war but are still the oppressors (don't ask how).

All the evil white men will be bumbling, neutered fools except for those that are race and gender swapped, who will be insert Mary-Sue Karens. Remember how they redid Starbuck? Yeah, not that.

How Jubal got his special space socks will be multi-season arc because that's what fans really wanted to know.

Lol on the last sentence. I forgot the whole racial oppression angle. Good catch!

Is the boardgame any good?

This is from someone I know who has a massive number of board games:

The board game is supposed to be really good, but it's long and complicated. It's probably going to take 3-5 hours your first time playing it.

There are a few Firefly board games, this is one everyone means when they're talking about it.

Yes, my hobby, too, but I haven't played it. By any chance does your boardgamer friend know if the game does the show justice? Does it depict the show's essence? The game has been on my radar, as we say in the community, and since you have piqued my interest in the show, I might have to bump it up to games-I-want-to-add-to-my-collection status.

I copied/pasted his message exactly, and his language suggests ("is supposed to be really good") that he has not personally played it. But I'm betting with the high rating on the site, that fans feel that it is true to the show. The "browncoats" are a really robust fan base. (It IS a very good show! On the strength of their efforts, they're the ones who even got Serenity to be made.) I don't have a membership there, but I saw on this page https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/138161/firefly-game/ratings a breakdown of scores (bell curve) which is trending towards the higher levels (high 8's, 9, and lower 10's, with lower numbers showing a lower distribution. There's a link on the bottom right that allows you to see what's been said about it, but that requires a membership, which I'm not inclined to do at this time.)

I don't think so. I look around me everyday in my community, and I realize Florida is NOT a typical example since mask wearing here has never reached the proportions it did in other states, but, of course we had our share also. But even today (actually yesterday) I went into the popular grocery here, and sure enough, there was a couple, older, but by appearances seemed hearty and in good health (yet of course you never know !), and they both had on masks. I never think of them as stupid, when I see such things. I suspect they might even be the very opposite, very intelligent but are afraid, afraid that the "stupid" bureaucrats fueling all this, could, possibly, be "right" after all. I myself had those kinds of thoughts come into my mind from time to time ! I also know that way before the "pandemic", many doctors around here advised their patients undergoing chemo and other cancer therapies, to wear masks in public places as a precaution. I can't speak to the actual value of that advice, but I know from various friends and neighbors, some doctors do advise that protocol. So when I go into a store or library, or office, and see someone wearing a mask, I always consider there may be circumstances I am not aware of ! But, I do think just the emotion of fear of dying, as irrational as it is, keeps some from removing the mask on their face and the rabbit's foot from their pocket.

most doctors are currently still in the stupid squad. they forgot what they learned in school and completely missed physics classes.

there is no hope for them or my jabbed friends, they will do as they are told with no critical thought. masks have been known to be harmful since at least the 70s

Expand full comment

True, we have studies going back some years on the possible counter indications of mask wearing, but it's the old "no conclusive" evidence, and preponderance of evidence, that allowed it to continue in our country in such industries as meat packing, food handling, etc. as well as just a general precautionary in some Eastern cultures far before "Covid". It does indeed go back to what is taught in schools, in medical schools, what is just accepted as "work place routine" ! Then, the selected items of emphasis, become...... inculcated !!!

Hey, we once lived in an agricultural state where the farmers walked through the fields throwing out purple colored sand before each planting season.... to keep the lions and tigers away you know, worked like a CHARM ! Never once a mauling of farmers, or ruining of crops from lions and tigers. So hey, masks, keep one in your pocket, hang one from the rear view mirror (though I personally frown on that one, it can be dangerous, possibly more dangerous that removing your mask while eating ! )

I keep saying--please don't let men design *anything* without a woman's supervision. You may make fun of women's driving but it's you guys who can never see around corners.

Expand full comment

Men without women remain boys, I don't think anyone disputes that? Not if you've seen a bunch of men (age completely irrelevant) prepairing to remove a stubborn tree-stump with home-made explosives.

But what's the equivalent for women?

Expand full comment

Everyone needs purpose and does really poorly without it. But just from my own observations, I think women are a little more competent, generalizing heavily here, at finding things/causes to nurture as useful substitutes. Women (before this generation, anyway, and generalizing again) can tolerate being alone in their spaces a little better than guys can.

But now? All bets are off. These kids today crying motherhood is hard and they just want their personal space back? Put 'em all in the same bucket of complete and total uselessness.

That was 22 years ago, and here we are. My own little sociological study with its glaring conclusion, given to the readership for free...

Had a friend when young. (Well I tell a lie, I had more than one friend.) His parents worked some high-faluting upper class jobs, I think one was a buyer of wine for the state monopoly on alcohol so she travelled the world drinking wine for the state, and his dad was in banking also travelling all the time.

That guy had every cool thing you could only dream of. And a nanny.

And was very sad and lonely because he couldn't hang out with normal kids his age - it would make his parents look bad so he was stuck with diplobrats and such, in Stockholm's upper class areas.

While me and my chums could go skinny-dipping, joyriding trains, hitch-hiking and whatever we pleased that no-one stopped us from.

That song, Cats in the Cradle, could have been about him. No wonder such kids grow up to become the Trudeaus of this world.

I was having a nice chat with the lady next door last night by her garage door when, what appeared to be a rodent of unusual size jetted past me and into her garage. I warned her and she ran for the house door and closed the garage door, retreating in her house. I didn't hear any screams since then (but she's not a screamer either). I wonder if she'll live through this.

I would encourage anyone to look into the connection between the Broad Institute - which owns CRSPR and the god-complexed individuals we know are the major public players out there. Naomi Wolf has an excellent piece out there relatedly, not on CRSPR but on a biomylk venture invested in by those who are trying to play gods, along with what is going on with our babies and pregnant mommies.
