IMHO, The Stranger is the inspiration for Freddie Mercury's Bohemian Rhapsody, which I saw live in 1976 - my first rock concert.

I read this in English in high school and then in French at university. It reminded me of the Dreyfus Affair and gave me a fear of French justice.
And even then, from a British perspective of manliness and keeping "a stiff upper lip", I empathised with the concept of keeping tears private.
Mind you, this was over fifty years ago, before Oprah and reality TV, when it became celebrated to expose all in public.
