Today's Must-Reads - 5 November 2022 & The British Heart Foundation says Covid is NOT behind excess CVD deaths

A selection of the latest news, studies, reports and articles

I spend a lot of time each day gathering together new information and interesting articles. I then pick one or two of the most interesting topics and write about them. However, that leaves a lot of missed out information that I’m not sharing.

Below is a summary of all the latest articles and information that I’ve found. Today, this is a slimmed down version for all subscribers but will be for paid subscribers only a lot of the time in the future.

But first a quick look at a new report by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) called “Tipping Point”.

The report states that since the beginning of the pandemic there have been over 30,000 excess deaths involving ischaemic heart disease (IHD) in England alone. This is 14% higher than usual. In addition, there have been thousands more excess deaths involving other heart or circulatory conditions, such a heart failure or cerebrovascular disease (stroke).

This consistent level of excess mortality involving heart and circulatory diseases is unique and not in keeping with what we have seen with other condition-specific causes of death, such as dementia and cancer.

Interestingly, the report says that Covid infection is no longer a driving force behind the excess cardiovascular disease deaths. According to the authors, it is likely that external factors, such as sustained bottlenecks in access and delivery of NHS services, are the main contributors to the number of extra deaths. Maybe other factors too, who knows?

France's nuclear troubles are mounting due primarily to routine maintenance of the country's 56 aging reactors. A new update from French electric utility company Electricite de France SA, commonly known as EDF, said an outlook for nuclear power generation was slashed ahead of winter, causing chaos in energy markets.

• FT - US companies endure record knock for missing earnings forecasts. Groups that disappointed on both profit and sales have underperformed the market by almost 7%.

• Electrek - Solar will become 10 times cheaper than gas in Europe – study.

• FT - Fed warns sharply higher interest rates could spark financial distress

  Financial stability report says banks are well capitalised against shocks from a downturn.
