Troops plagued by filthy conditions, squatters in military barracks: report
PHOTOS/VIDEO.
Investigators from the GAO visited 12 unnamed military installations to compile the report and spoke with service members in discussion groups to gain their perspective. Many service members complained of dirty water that was seemingly unsafe to drink in their barracks buildings. Others complained of broken air conditioning and heating systems, forcing many members to purchase individual air conditioning units for their sweltering rooms or turn to unsafe space heaters to provide warmth in the colder months. Another issue noted by investigators was that some buildings lacked secure windows and doors that have in some cases led to squatters occupying the rooms.
In one extreme case, officials at one installation told GAO investigators that "service members are responsible for cleaning biological waste that may remain in a barracks room after a suicide."
The GAO report included dozens of photos of military barracks buildings from the installations investigators visited, with the photos showing restrooms with sewage overflowing, cracked sewage pipes, water damage, pests and mold or mildew growth. Other photos showed the possessions belonging to apparent squatters who were not authorized to be living in the buildings.

U.S. dollar scores first ‘golden cross’ since July 2021, signaling more trouble for stocks ahead
A golden cross occurs when the 50-day moving average closes above the 200-day moving average. It’s a popular signal among technical analysts and often — though definitely not always — signals that momentum is building in a given direction.
On the other hand, a “death cross” occurs when the 50-day moving average breaks below the 200-day. A “death cross” in the U.S. dollar occurred on Jan. 10. Afterward, the buck trended lower for the next six months, ultimately hitting its lowest level of 2023 on July 14. Since then, the buck has been in a sustained uptrend that some currency strategists think has grounds to continue, now that the Federal Reserve bolstered its forecast to keep interest rates above 5% through 2024.

DOUBLE DIP RECESSION.
Recession Warnings Escalate as Principal Economic Indicator Declines Again -
Economic analyst Mike “Mish” Shedlock foresees a double-dip recession, characterized by a brief recovery phase followed by a downturn, re-entering the recessionary zone. Shedlock emphasized that never before have such indicators persisted for this long without an ensuing recession.
He also brought attention to an alternative metric called GDPplus, devised by economists at the Philadelphia Fed, which incorporates gross domestic income (GDI) to provide a real-time estimate of economic activity.
