Boris signals a change
Yesterday, Boris Johnson, the former Prime Minister of the UK, made yet another surprise visit to Ukraine.

Boris doesn’t visit Zelensky for fun, he is usually passing on a message from Washington. The first time he made a surprise visit to Kiev, in April 2022, Zelensky was considering signing a peace deal with Russia. However, that’s not what Washington wanted and many sources claim Boris was flown straight over to stop the negotiations. Boris reportedly told Zelensky that Putin can’t be negotiated with and the West isn’t ready for the war to end yet.
So does Boris’ recent surprise visit signal a new phase to the war in Ukraine? What orders did Boris pass on to Zelensky this time?
Whilst he was there, Boris was awarded an honorary title in Lviv.
The Mayor of the city described him as “a great friend of Ukraine”, adding “his support goes far beyond diplomacy. It is priceless”.
His visit coincides with a Nato announcement that the alliance plans to launch the biggest military exercise since the cold war. 41,000 troops will be assembled next year to test readiness to repel a Russian invasion, according to the FT.
It will start in spring next year and is expected to involve between 500 and 700 air combat missions, more than 50 ships, and about 41,000 troops, Nato officials said. It is designed to model potential manoeuvres against an enemy modelled on a coalition led by Russia, named Occasus for the purposes of the drill.
Occasus is a latin word meaning “setting" (as in the setting sun) or “downfall”, “ruin” or “death”.
Did Boris tell Zelensky that he needs the war to continue until this Nato exercise takes place?
His visit comes just after Victoria Nuland visited the country. After the visit Nuland said that Ukraine’s allies should prepare for a long confrontation in the war. She said that the recent visit of US Secretary of State Blinken showed, no matter how serious the success of the Ukrainian military was, everything will not end in the coming weeks.
"If Putin wins, it will mean that evil will become something acceptable to the world. Therefore, we should help Ukraine, because it stands on the side of good and democracy,"
In another interview, Nuland said that the US needs to help Ukraine “have what it needs to put some of Russia’s most precious assets at risk”.
The next phase of the war seems to have been signalled and it looks like that involves some serious escalation.
