Labor Day was created to celebrate all the work of the labor movement mid-20c, specifically, that gave people 5 day work weeks, paid vacations, eliminating child labor in factories, overtime pay, healthier work conditions amongst other benefits that made work conditions abominable. Conditions such as the shirtwaist factory fire that killed over 120 young women due, in part, to the owners locking the doors to prevent workers leaving and other horrors finally got the public to react to these conditions. The UK and probably most/all industrialized countries probably had equally abusive work conditions but in the US the Movement they inspired demanded national recognition.
